Preparation & Planning

A competent and experienced DIY person is capable of laying the electric underfloor heating system, however an electrician will be required to connect the system to the mains and install the thermostat and controller.

Careful planning is essential when installing any new underfloor heating system. See the checklist below to ensure you plan your new underfloor heating system effectively.

Checklist
  • What type of room / floor finish / floor construction / size room m2 are you planning on installing underfloor heating in?

  • Choose where you will place your bathroom / kitchen furniture, as the underfloor heating systems cannot be fixed under kitchen units, baths, showers or pedestal toilets. This will give you the remaining floor space m2 available for your underfloor heating system

  • Enter this information into the Underfloor Heating Selector to find the:

    • best underfloor heating systems available for your specific plan

    • amount of mat, cable or foil required

    • the quote for your project

  • Decide whether you want to lay insulation boards beneath the underfloor heating system to improve the efficiency of heat output, whilst considering how this will affect the floor height.

  • Find out what room and floor temperatures you can achieve with the different heating system options. See information on specific underfloor heating systems below: mat, cable or foil.

  • Decide where you want the control panels to be sited

  • Use the manufacturers detailed instructions and follow them precisely throughout the installation process

Mat Underfloor Heating

Matting systems can be used on top of existing screeds or timber floors* to provide a cost effective method of radiating a pleasant, even temperature across the floor. This is ideal for use in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, hallways, living areas and conservatories, in both new and existing buildings.

To lay a matting system, fix the matting to the floor with double-sided adhesive tape (not necessary with the DeviMat system). Next over screed the mat with a polymer modified tile adhesive, such as Profix Flex Fast Set Grey Adhesive, or with a high grade latex based self-levelling smoothing underlayment, such as Ardex Arditex NA. Allow the screed to set then fix the tiles as normal.

The two electrical underfloor matting systems Tile Fix Direct offers are Magnum enerMat and DeviMat.

DeviMat

Devi DeviMat Installation Instructions

DeviMat is a thin (3.5mm), self-adhesive, electrically heated mat; specifically designed for installation within the adhesive / self-levelling compound layer, under the chosen floor covering. We sell Devi systems in 2 output levels, either 100W or 150W per square metre. The Devimat 100W and Devimat 150W can be lain directly on concrete or sand and cement screeds. The Devimat 100W system can be fixed directly to a wood floor, the Devimat 150W system, however, requires a layer of Marmox tile backer insulation board. This both protects the wood floor and also improves the efficiency of mat.

Tile Fix Direct stock both Devimat 100W and Devimat 150W from 1m - 12m, as well as the Devireg 550 Thermostat Timer, the best-suited thermostat for the DeviMat. The mat is simply rolled out, the mesh cut and turned to fit the available free floor area. As the cable is a twin conductor, there is no second tail to return to the thermostat, saving on installation time and costs. The DeviMat system comes with a 10 year Devi warranty.

Magnum enerMat

Magnum enerMat Installation Instructions

Magnum enerMat is a 150W per square metre open nylon mat, with integral conductor and resistance cable. The insulation covering of the heating element is made from Teflon with a protective woven wire braid and a PVC sheath, making it 100% waterproof. Magnum enerMat has high tensile cable strength, yet is only 3.5mm thick. Tile Fix Direct stock Magnum enerMat from 1m2 to 10m2, as well as the Magnum Digital Energy Control Timer Thermostat, recommended for use with the Magnum enerMat.

The system is designed for use on concrete floors, although you can adapt a wooden floor using Marmox tile backer insulation boards. The system is cost effective, easy to install and is 100% maintenance free. The Magnum enerMat system comes with a full Magnum lifetime guarantee.

Note: As with all underfloor heating systems do not heat the floor until a week after fixing the tiles, and then set to a low heat and take a full week to bring the floor up to full operating temperature.

* 100W systems can be laid directly onto timber. 150W systems must be laid on Marmox insulation boards (laid on top of the timber).

Cable Underfloor Heating

Cable underfloor heating is an ideal "invisible" heat source with no clutter from pipes and radiators. It can be used as a primary heat source as well as comfort heating, ideal for use in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens and conservatories, in both new and renovated buildings.

Tile Fix Direct stock Magnum Millicable and Magnum enerCable, a cost effective cable underfloor heating system, in varying sizes within their range.

Magnum Millicable

Magnum Millicable Installation Instructions

Magnum millicable is a fully insulated, 100% waterproof, loose wire underfloor heating system, ideal for use in wet room environments. The system is designed for use under tile, stone, marble, slate or similar. It caters specifically to awkward or irregularly shaped areas, and has a capacity of 11.5W per linear metre of cable at 230V. The cable spacing can be altered to adjust the heat output levels. This function allows the system to be adaptable, therefore catering to all heating requirements.

The Magnum millicable kit is an economical purchase, including; a Magnum millicable twin conductor cable unit, flexible sensor tube, floor primer (1 litre) and a roll of 25 metre duct tape (15mm wide). To be used in conjunction with the Magnum Digital Energy Control Timer Thermostat

The Magnum millicable underfloor heating system offers a fast and flexible installation process, perfect for small renovation projects. The system can be fixed directly to primed concrete or plywood subfloors and Marmox tile backer boards can be fitted to subfloors not compatible for direct installation. Please note that underfloor heating systems cannot be placed underneath fixed units such as; baths, showers, kitchen units or washbasins. The Magnum millicable system offers a 10-year guarantee and is 100% maintenance free.

Magnum enerCable

Magnum enerCable Installation Instructions

Magnum enerCable is a 7mm thick cable, which comprises of conductor and resistance wires insulated with XLPE and a ground wire encased in PVC, making it 100% waterproof. The high tensile strength cable heating is quickly and simply installed in screed for new builds or renovation projects. The minimum installation thickness of the screed is 30mm, excluding tiles, floor finish or Marmox tile backer insulation boards.

To lay the Magnum enerCable system, fix the cables into a sand or cement screed. Using spacer strips or a steel mesh reinforcing grid, you can install the cable with complete accuracy for individual output requirements. Once the screed has been allowed to set for 3 weeks, the tiling can be laid as normal. An under screed cable system is generally cheaper than a matting system as it does not require additional tiling labour.

The Magnum enerCable system is economical, simple to install and easy to size. Tile Fix Direct stock Magnum enerCable from 3m2 - 18.9m2, which can be combined to fit all room sizes. Tile Fix also stock the Magnum Digital Energy Control Timer Thermostat, recommended for use with the Magnum enerCable. The Magnum enerCable is 100% maintenance free, and comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Note: Do not heat the floor until a week after fixing the tiles, and then set to a low heat and take a full week to bring the floor up to operating temperature.

Foil Underfloor Heating

Foil underfloor heating is a thin system, between 0.2 - 0.3mm, designed to operate at a low voltage providing comfort heating in both domestic and commercial environments. It is easy to size and simple to install as unlike other underfloor heating systems it can be laid directly on concrete or wooden floors without screeding.

Tile Fix Direct stock Magnum microFoil and Magnum enerFoil in varying sizes within the foil underfloor heating range.

Magnum microFoil

Magnum microFoil Installation Instructions

Magnum microFoil is a technically advanced 0.3mm, 80 watt or 120 watt, underfloor heating system, suitable for installation directly under the ever more popular wooden, parquet or laminate floors. It does not require a cement screed like most other existing underfloor heating systems however it is recommended you lay 6mm polystyrene insulation plates beneath the Magnum microFoil heating system. These polystyrene insulation plates not only increase the thermal value of the floor but also reduce noise.

The Magnum microFoil underfloor heating system is controlled by a digital clock-thermostat with floor sensor. Magnum microFoil is simple to install and ensures a comfortable warm environment when using a timber floor.

Magnum enerFoil

The Magnum enerFoil advanced underfloor heating system is an economical and 100% safe low voltage (24/28v) system, in stock at Tile Fix Direct at 80 watts or 110 watts. It is designed to raise the temperature of the floor covering by generating a constant, even heat. The actual temperature maintained will vary according to the ambient temperature, flooring, insulation and selected voltage. The system is powered by a transformer that ideally should be installed outside the room; usually in an adjoining wardrobe, cupboard, loft space or similar. It does not require a thermostat controller. The enerFoil underfloor heating transformer can easily be connected with multiple and varying sizes of foil sheets to achieve the specific coverage you require.

The system is simple to install and is suitable for use directly under tiles, stone, marble, slate and wood laminate. It is only 0.2mm thick and can be used on concrete or wooden floors without screeding. Magnum enerFoil is fixed to the floor using an acrylic floor tile adhesive called Enerbond, the foil surface is also primed using Enerbond. The simplicity and strength of enerFoil makes it ideal for installation in wet or dry commercial and domestic locations. If Magnum enerFoil is to be used in wet rooms, the foil should be coated with BAL WP1 waterproofing compound following the application of Enerbond primer.

Note: Do not heat the floor until a week after fixing the tiles, and then set to a low heat and take a full week to bring the floor up to operating temperature.
