A trendy addition to any home, a wet room is a stylish, practical alternative to the traditional bathroom. While they are a popular amenity in spas and luxurious high end households, wetrooms are successfully finding their way into mainstream homes as well.

What is a wetroom, and why should you consider having it installed in your home? Let’s look into some of the technical details and the benefits a wetroom can offer.

What Are Wetrooms And Why Should You Have One In Your Home?

Essentially, a wetroom is part of the bathroom or the whole bathroom which has been waterproofed, and is used as a showering area. It provides easy access to your shower, and its design contributes to its contemporary appearance, which is stylish and minimalist.

The benefits of owning a wetroom are most visible in smaller bathrooms, as the wet room can help you create the illusion of a bigger space. It also looks stylish, and provides you with an attractive space for showering. Plus, it doesn’t confine the space you can shower in, as you can use the entire room if desired. Wetrooms can be installed into bathrooms of any size, as the components of wetrooms can be easily customised. 5 Benefits Of Marmox Board

Marmox Board

Marmox Board

Marmox Multiboard is a waterproof, insulating tile backer board that comes in a variety of thicknesses and lengths. It is comprised of extruded polystyrene that prevents water and water vapour from passing through it, meaning it is fully waterproof and not just water resistant. Each side of the tile backer board is coated with a layer of fibreglass reinforced polymer concrete that enables a strong bond to form with both tile adhesive and plaster.

Tile Fix Direct stocks Marmox Board in thicknesses ranging from 4mm-50mm with long boards available in some sizes; the thicker the board, the greater the insulating properties. For difficult or unusually shaped areas we also stock curved and angled Marmox Tile Backer Board. In this blog post we look at five benefits of Marmox Board.

1. Waterproof

Being completely waterproof, as opposed to merely water resistant, means that no water at all can be absorbed into the core of the Multiboard. This means that it will not distort in the way that plasterboard would. Marmox Board can be used as a waterproofing tile backer board in a variety of situations such as in wet rooms, bathrooms and swimming pools.

2. Highly Insulating

Marmox Board is highly insulating, making it great for dry lining buildings, placing below electric underfloor heating, and for adding insulation to wet rooms. The Energy Saving Trust recommends using Marmox Board as an effective internal wall insulation board in buildings that do not have cavity walls and where insulation on the outside of the building is impractical.

Placed below electric underfloor heating, the board will ensure that heat is projected upwards so that it does not dissipate through the floor. A significant amount of heat from underfloor heating can be lost if a layer of insulation is not laid below it.

3. Strong

Marmox Multiboards are strong and can withstand loads of 40 tonnes/m² on floors and will hold up to 62kg/m² on walls – more than enough to hold tiles, adhesive and fixtures/fittings. Their ability to hold such heavy loads makes Marmox Boards ideal for use with large tiles and stones and they are just as suitable for fixing to stud work as they are to solid walls.

4. Easy To Manoeuvre

Marmox Tile Backer Boards are lightweight and easy to handle by one person. The 4mm standard board weighs 2.3kg and the 12.5mm long boards weigh 5.6kg, with the other sizes stocked on Tile Fix Direct falling between these weights. Multiboards are also easy to cut to size if required, with a saw or a knife, and can be fixed in both vertical and horizontal positions on walls and floors.

5. Ready To Tile Or Plaster

Marmox Board is specifically designed so that it is ready for tiling or plastering on immediately. Be sure to first tape all joints between boards with Marmox Reinforcing Tape, or tape all corners and joints with waterproof tape if the area needs to be waterproof. You can then tile directly onto the board. If plastering, coat the Marmox Board with one part PVA and five parts water then plaster whilst primer is still tacky.

Reliable Marmox Wet Room Insulation From Tile Fix Direct

Wet rooms have become increasingly popular with homeowners who are looking to redecorate their bathroom. We think it’s a great alternative to an ordinary bathroom and can potentially add value to your property.

A wet room is a waterproof area for showering. In order to waterproof it properly and avoid possible leaks, we advise that you use Marmox Board. This provides an even surface and support for the tiles, and can be used elsewhere around the house for insulation.

The Uses Of Marmox Board

Marmox Board, which is also called Marmox Multiboard, is an ideal solution for insulating and waterproofing your wet room, as well as for underfloor heating. A suitable material for any framework, it can be fixed to wood, metal or brick.

Marmox Board is lightweight and easily cut with a knife or saw. It is manufactured from extruded polystyrene and covered with closely woven fibreglass mesh, embedded in a cement polymer mortar.

Marmox Board is an ideal material for waterproofing your wetroom as it is extremely versatile. Curved Marmox boards, as well as pipe boxing boards, will help you to achieve the design you are working towards. The range of thicknesses available makes it a very useful material for underfloor heating as it helps to prevent heat loss and will therefore reduce your heating bills.

This means that its usage isn’t limited to the bathroom or wet room. Choose the thickest variety for the most effective underfloor heating insulation – simply lay it on the subfloor before adding electric underfloor heating and tiles.

Other applications of the Multiboard include using it as:

• A base for tiles.

• Insulation for underfloor heating.

• Dry lining insulation.

• Waterproofing material.

A reliable solution that can be used in your bathroom, wet room, and your home, Marmox Board helps you achieve your desired design and is a cost-effective material for heating insulation.

Use Marmox Board In Your Wetroom

Marmox Multiboard comes in a range of sizes and thicknesses. The sturdy design, ease of cutting, and its excellent insulation properties make this board ideal for creating the perfect wetroom.

5 Benefits Of Wet Room Shower Screens

Wet Room Shower Screen

When installing a wet room in your home, you have a multitude of choices to make. You can opt simply for a walk in shower, or instead waterproof the entire room; you can choose a neutral decor, or inject some striking colour; and when choosing tiles you must decide upon your preferred colour(s), design and material. Initially, however, you may not give much thought to whether or not to include a wet room shower screen. If you do not consider this option in the planning stages though, you may end up without a shower screen and feeling slightly disappointed with the final result. Whilst not essential in a fully waterproofed wet room, they are a popular addition and in this blog post we take a look at five benefits of wet room shower screens.

1. Stop Water Splashing Into The Room

Walk In Shower

Installing a wet room shower screen in your walk in shower prevents water in the shower area from splashing onto the floor and other fixtures and fittings. If your wet room area is small, then containing the water is particularly beneficial so you do not end up with soggy towels and loo roll.

If only the shower area has been waterproofed, then it is important to add a screen to contain the water within the shower area, in order to prevent leaks. If, on the other hand, the entire room has been fully waterproofed, leaks are not a concern. Either way, water on the floor poses a safety hazard and having a wet room shower screen as a physical barrier to contain the water will minimise any risk of slipping.

2. Create A More Traditional Shower Enclosure

A walk in shower provides a modern alternative to traditional shower-over-bath sets ups or white plastic shower trays. However, for many people the sense of openness that comes with not having a wet room shower screen can be a step too far and leave them feeling exposed. By adding a screen to the walk in shower, it creates a more familiar shower enclosure and provides a sense of being enveloped by the shower area, creating a warm cosy feeling. The familiar feel of the shower enclosure may also have more appeal to prospective buyers if selling your home, and may be viewed positively as a modern twist on a classic set up.

3. Can Provide Additional Storage

Installing a wet room shower screen provides an opportunity for adding extra storage. For example, a double robe hook clips over the top of the shower screen so that you can easily hang your towel and robe just outside the shower, meaning you can reach them without having to drip water across the floor. You could also add hanging racks to organise haircare products that similarly clip over the screen, adding convenience and saving space.

4. Will Not Create A Visual Barrier

Clear and frameless, wet room shower screens are minimalist and will not obstruct the ability to see the entire room, thus adding to the illusion of space. The simplicity of the design complements the modern walk in shower, whilst providing a welcome physical barrier to the shower spray.

5. Easy To Clean

A considerable benefit of wet room shower screens is that they are easy to clean and maintain in a hygienic condition. As they are frameless, you do not have to worry about mould growing in nooks and crannies, and basic regular cleaning will help keep their clean look.

Tile Fix Direct sells wet room shower screens from Orbry in a variety of sizes. Our handy shower screen advice page also has fantastic information about Orbry shower screens and accessories which can help you create your individual shower look.
