How To Choose Electric Underfloor Heating

How to choose electric underfloor heating

Electric underfloor heating is a small and affordable luxury that will add a touch of comfort to your home. Tiled floors can feel particularly cold under foot and adding underfloor heating will warm them up whilst also helping you heat your home more efficiently. There are a number of things to consider when choosing the right electric underfloor heating system and we’ve put them together for you below.

1. Determine which room you are going to install the underfloor heating in and note the floor finish, floor construction, and the size (m2).

2. Note where the kitchen and/or bathroom appliances and furniture will be located. Underfloor heating can’t be fixed under kitchen units, baths, showers, or pedestal toilets. This will give you the remaining floor space (m2) available for the underfloor heating system.

3. Enter all of the information in the Underfloor Heating Selector to find the best underfloor heating system for your project. It will help to determine the correct amount of mat or cable that is required and also quote how much the entire underfloor heating system will cost.

5. Decide if you want to lay insulation boards beneath the heating system to improve the efficiency of the heat output. (Keep in mind this will affect the height of the floor.)

6. Decide on where the control panels will be located.

7. Read over the manufacturers’ instructions and guides. Follow them precisely throughout the entire installation process to ensure that everything is installed correctly and safely.

When Not To Use Ready-Mixed Adhesives

Mixed Adhesives

When using a ready mixed water dispersible tile adhesive it must be left to set and cure, which allows the water in the adhesive to evaporate. Evaporation will speed up if the tiles are being fixed to an absorbent surface such as plasterboard, plaster or render, but the process will slow down if fixed to non-absorbent surfaces such as tile backer board, old tiles or painted surfaces. To speed evaporation it is good practise to leave the joints un-grouted for 7-10 days.

More often than not it is impractical to leave tiles un-grouted for this length of time, therefore we would recommend a cement-based adhesive such as BAL Rapidset Flexible. As a general rule do not use ready mixed adhesives on tiles larger than 300x300m (90,000mm2) or impervious tiles such as porcelain or glass. If in doubt use a cement based tile adhesive which cures chemically and does not require evaporation to set.
