Marmox Sloping Board & SoundBoard Now Available at Tile Fix Direct

We’ve been stocking Marmox products since the beginning of Tile Fix Direct over 10 years ago and today Multiboard tile backer boards and Showerlay shower trays are still two of our best selling products. So we’re excited to add two more to our range – Sloping Board and SoundBoard. Sloping Board is designed to create a fall on balconies or in wet rooms while SoundBoard provides soundproofing for floors – read on to find out more.

Marmox Sloping Board

Sloping Board only differs from standard Multiboard in thickness; at the thinner end it measures 10mm thick with the slope extending to 33mm at the thicker end. The 1200x1200mm boards are still made of XPS foam sandwiched between two layers of patented polymer-concrete and has all the same properties – it’s waterproof, insulating, lightweight and perfect for tiling. The 10mm to 33mm slope may sound like an odd choice but it’s actually been designed to allow you to extend the slope indefinitely using 20mm thick boards as per the diagram below.

Sloping Board can be used internally and externally to create a self-draining tiled surface, in fact it was originally developed for use on balconies but is also a great solution for wet rooms or communal showering areas where a drainage channel is set against a wall. Tiling a balcony or terrace can often be difficult due to the fluctuations in temperature which can cause cracked tiles, but Marmox Sloping Board absorbs a large amount of the lateral movement in the sub floor making tiling a balcony a much safer prospect. When installed using Marmox waterproofing products it’s easy to create a leak-free tiled balcony above a habitable space.

Marmox SoundBoard

Impact sound can be a big concern when tiling floors in flats and apartments, in fact many local authorities do not allow tiled bathroom floors in shared accommodation for this very reason. Impact sound, illustrated by the red arrow in the diagram below, is often increased by tiling a floor making a solution like SoundBoard extremely important.

Marmox SoundBoard has a layer of rubber foam on one side that stops the vibrations transferring to the room below, reducing the impact sound by 20db. The boards are available in two thicknesses: 8mm and 12mm; the difference in the two thicknesses is that the 12mm board provides more thermal insulation than the 8mm version.

SoundBoard is much more than just soundproofing; it also acts as a decoupling layer to absorb lateral movement and prevent cracks in the tiles as well as being totally waterproof and providing thermal insulation.

  • Reduces sound (DLW) by 20db
  • Reduces heat loss by up to 60%
  • Load bearing – 30 tonnes/m2
  • Easy to cut with a saw or knife
  • Ready to receive tiles
  • fully waterproof

You can buy Marmox 8mm SoundBoard and Marmox 12mm SoundBoard online now.

New Product: Orbry Pro Ply Construction Board

Orbry Pro Ply is a water resistant construction board that can be used to reinforce walls and floors as an alternative to Hardiebacker or No More Ply. It can be installed on a number of different substrates including concrete, timber, brick, stud partitions and heated screeds. Once installed the lightweight boards can be tiled, painted, wallpapered or plastered to achieve the finish you require.

The boards are made of magnesium oxide with a manufacturing process that produces very little CO2, making them much more environmentally friendly than cement-particle or gypsum boards. As well as producing less CO2, the boards are free from asbestos and silica and will not be affected by mould, fungus or insects. The strong boards are water resistant and dimensionally stable when wet, but they are also unaffected by changes in temperature – meaning they can be used inside or outside. Being non-flammable and non-combustable makes these boards perfect for use with both wet and electric underfloor heating systems and as part of fire resistant systems and firewalls.

Benefits of Orbry Pro Ply Board

  • Water resistant
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Strong
  • Non-flammable
  • Lightweight
  • Available in 6mm or 12mm thicknesses
  • Impact resistant
  • Suitable for internal & external use
  • Asbestos & silica free
  • Mould resistant
  • Can receive tiles, paint, wallpaper & plaster
  • Easy to install

Each board has a rough and a smooth side, the rough side must be facing outwards – so the smooth side is installed directly onto the floor or wall. The boards & substrate must be primed before installation – check the full installation instructions for more information. 6mm thick boards can be used to strengthen an existing timber floor in place of 15-18mm WBP plywood, while the 12mm boards replace plasterboard on walls & ceilings internally. The boards are water resistant but will need tanking if used in wet areas.

Orbry Pro Ply is available to order online at Tile Fix Direct with free delivery on all orders over £50. Please note that due to the size of the boards they will be delivered on a pallet. If you are looking for a waterproof board why not try Orbry Board or Marmox Multiboard?

The Benefits of Using Long Tile Backer Boards on Walls

Benefits of Long Tile Backer Boards

Tile backer boards are now a common choice for tilers wanting a level, even and waterproof surface to tile on to in kitchens, bathrooms and wet rooms. They are extremely versatile, being suitable for most substrates, as well as interior and exterior use. Tile backer boards are also extremely strong, making them the ideal choice when fitting heavy tiles to walls that might otherwise not hold their weight.

Average walls in homes measure around 2.4m high, meaning that standard tile backer boards – which tend to be around 1200mm long – will not cover the entire wall. Long boards are usually double this length, therefore giving better coverage when fixing to walls. We stock both Orbry and Marmox long tile backer boards; Marmox Multiboard long boards are 2500mm long, and Orbry long boards measure 2440mm in length.

So, why use long tile backer boards when you could cut standard boards to size easily? When using standard length boards, you need to cut the boards to size, then fix two or three pieces to the wall to cover it from floor to ceiling. Using a long board, you can make one cut to create the perfect length board and then fit it. Not only is the installation process quicker and easier, but there are also less joints between the boards – meaning using long boards will save on materials, as well as time and money when installing.

Benefits of Long Tile Backer Boards

  • Save time when measuring and cutting boards
  • Less fixings required as there are less joints between the boards
  • Reduced amount of tape needed for joints
  • No noggins are required for fixing long boards
  • Installation time is reduced
  • Boards are fully waterproof and extremely strong
  • Provides the perfect background for tiling

At Tile Fix Direct we stock a range of sizes of tile backer board, including several different thicknesses of long board. See the table below for details of the long tile backer boards we have available.

Why Electric Underfloor Heating Is Ideal For Wetrooms

We take a look at why electric underfloor heating is perfect for wetrooms & bathrooms | tilefixdirect.com/blog

Electric Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is a popular alternative to conventional radiators when heating a home and electric underfloor heating can safely be used in wetrooms and bathrooms, making it an ideal choice. Electric underfloor heating typically warms the room more quickly than radiators and does so at a lower temperature, which can save you money on your heating bills. This form of heating is even more efficient if it is installed on top of insulated tile backer boards, which reflect the heat upwards and minimise heat lost through the subfloor.

The self-adhesive electric underfloor heating mats sold on Tile Fix Direct are easy to install and ideal for use under tiles in wetrooms. By following the manufacturer’s instructions, a competent DIYer should be able to do most of the installation if they choose. However, a qualified electrician must carry out any electrical work, which must conform to current IEE wiring regulations and is subject to Part P of the building regulations.

Benefits Of Electric Underfloor Heating Mats

  • The underfloor heating mats from DEVI and Orbry that are sold on Tile Fix Direct are waterproof, meaning they are suitable for use in wetrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms.
  • Self-adhesive electric underfloor heating mats are easy to install.
  • They help evaporate water spilled on the floor making wetrooms safer.
  • A significant benefit of this type of underfloor heating is it can be installed on any level of the house – particularly beneficial as most primary bathrooms or wetrooms are upstairs.

Buying & Installing Underfloor Heating

On Tile Fix Direct we sell underfloor heating from respected brands Orbry and DEVI at low online-only prices. With various mats available, you are sure to find the right heating option for every room including wetrooms. If you would like to install your Orbry electric underfloor heating mats yourself, first take a look at the Orbry installation guide and if in doubt, consult a professional installer.
