The original Marmox Multiboard is ideal for a variety of applications, which is why it’s one of the leading boards on the market today. Multiboards have a wide range of uses from waterproofing walls and floors to providing thermal insulation and dry lining. When used in bathrooms you get a tile backer board, waterproofing, and insulation all in one easy to install board! Marmox Multiboards are also used as insulation boards and are the easiest solution for insulating and waterproofing a room in one quick and easy install.

Made from reinforced high performance extruded polystyrene, each side of the waterproof board is faced with fibreglass mesh embedded into a cement polymer mortar. This rigid construction makes these boards perfect to use on the floor with underfloor heating wire systems. Using Multiboards in this scenario improves the efficiency and reduces your heating costs. These boards are also used as tile backer boards because they act as an effective and easy to work with decoupling layer. As the Marmox Multiboard is safely and securely fixed to walls and floors, it forms a barrier between them and your tiles. This helps to prevent tiles and grout cracking due to horizontal movement.

We routinely see Multiboards used as waterproof tile backer boards, electric underfloor heating insulation and in wet room construction. They can also used for dry lining and insulation of cellars and loft conversions, as well as rigid partition wall boarding too. Here at Tile Fix Direct we stock the standard Marmox Multiboards in 1250mm x 600mm in thicknesses ranging from 4mm up to 50mm.

This is an OK product, but not my favourite. A cross between the cement-based boards (Hardibacker etc) and the lightweight XPS cored products such as Schlueter, Wedi, Orbry etc which are less messy to handle. Takes adhesive very well, but extra care needed to get waterproofing glue fully into the depressions. Package arrived with damage to one corner, but managed to work round it.

Frequently asked questions about Marmox Boards

How do I fix Marmox boards?

There are several different methods to fix these boards depending on where they are going, and how you'd like to fix them. We've got it all covered in the How to Guide tab above. We also have installation bundle packs readily available where we've created a shopping list of everything you'd need to install Marmox Multiboards in most simple scenarios .

What is Marmox Board?

Marmox Boards are waterproofing tile backer boards made from CFC and XPS extruded polystyrene foam bonded with layers of fibreglass reinforced polymer cement. The surface of reinforced polymer concrete is perfect for tile adhesion, waterproofing or plastering. Marmox Boards are difficult to bend, bow or distort compared to plasterboard.

Are Marmox Boards waterproof?

Marmox Multiboards are completely waterproof and impermeable to water. They are commonly used to protect walls and floors in wet rooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

Is Marmox Board Fireproof?

Generally speaking yes. Marmox boards are rated as is class “O”, indicating that they generally not burn except in circumstances where they are in contact with flammable materials or extremely high temperatures in excess of 350°C.

What is Marmox Board made of?

Marmox Insulation Boards are made of extruded polystyrene. This high performance, reinforced dry-lining insulation boards made of waterproof extruded polystyrene, each side being faced with fibreglass mesh embedded into a waterproof cement polymer mortar.

Can you cut Marmox Board?

Marmox boards are very easy to cut to size using a standard working knife.

What thickness board is sufficient to make a difference to heat loss?

To meet current building regulations very thick layers are required. In our experience, using at least a 20mm thick Marmox Multiboard will make a noticeable reduction to the heat loss and provide insulation.

How many fixings are needed per board?

Without using any adhesive, a short board will need two rows of five (10) or if the board is 12.5mm or 10mm thick, three rows of four (12). A long board will require 15 fixings; three rows of five.

Used with adhesive (the dot and dab method), five fixings per short board and nine fixings per long are recommended.

On floors, the tile adhesive method should be used whenever possible. If the only practical option is mechanical fixing, screws and washers should be used every 30cm – that is 15 per board.

Can I plaster directly onto Marmox Boards?

Yes! With no priming required either! The surface of the boards contains additives to reduce the porosity and stop the possible formation of ettringite salts which can sometimes occur when a gypsum plaster is applied to a concrete surface. The boards therefore do not need to be primed..

How many boards will I need?

Small boards are 0.6m x 1.25m - that's three quarters of a square metre so you need to divide the area you want by three quarters and that's the number of 'short boards' you require.
