Refresh Your Faded Black Limestone Patio with LTP Blackstone Sealer & Restorer

Has your limestone patio faded from black to grey in the years since it was first installed? Do you dream of that freshly paved look again? Well you’re in luck! Introducing LTP’s Blackstone Sealer and Restorer which will make your limestone patio look good as new. LTP are experts when it comes to sealing, cleaning and maintenance products for a range of tile and stone materials, so you can trust that Blackstone will do the job.

LTP has launched a new outdoor sealer and restorer designed for use on external dark natural stone and artificial stone surfaces. This new formula restores the appearance of faded limestone, marble, slate and concrete whilst also creating a permanent finish which provides the stone with protection from the elements. It is quick and easy to use and can be applied in multiple coats until the desired colour effect is achieved ranging from grey to ebony.

LTP Blackstone Sealer & Restorer is ideal for patios, paths, terraces and even external cladding, transforming tired grey into bold black. This before and after image from a satisfied customer really shows the difference LTP Blackstone can make to faded limestone paving.

When applying the restorer wear gloves and ensure that any surfaces that aren’t being treated are covered and protected. For honed surfaces use a soft cloth or sealant applicator, for rough cut or textured surfaces apply with a foam roller or paint brush, make sure to apply the product evenly. Allow the sealer and restorer time to absorb and dry between each application. Once the final coat has been applied do not walk on the treated surface for at least four hours. The surface can be treated as normal after a full 24 hours have passed.

It’s important to remember that this product is a permanent staining solution that will darken the surface of the stone and the grout joints making it very difficult to remove once applied. Test on an inconspicuous area before general application and do not walk on treated surfaces until the solution has completely dried.

A couple of coats and a day to cure is all it takes to give your patio a new lease of life. From faded grey to shining black, give your patio a little TLC this summer. LTP Blackstone is available in 1L bottles at Tile Fix Direct, which should give you approximately 30m2 coverage in a single coat.

Household floor or all-purpose cleaners claim to be suitable for for a range of different floor coverings, however as these products tend to be highly acidic they can be damaging to your tiled floors. The super-strength cleaners can not only harm the surface of your tiles, but they can also be damaging to the grout joints too. When Anthony Robb, owner of Wellington Tile Company, was importing terracotta in the 1980s he spotted a gap in the market. He wanted to give the stone an antique finish, so went home and created his own sealer in a cement mixer. Inspired by the ‘lionheart’ terracotta he was sealing, the brand was named Lionheart Terracotta Products, or LTP for short. The LTP range of cleaning and sealing products are now sold in over 700 tile, stone, fireplace and DIY showrooms across the UK.

LTP Mattstone H2O

LTP Mattstone H2O is a water based impregnating sealer suitable for use with all types of natural stone, quarry, brick and paving. The sealant gently enhances the colour of your stone whilst protecting against staining by repelling water, oil and grease. LTP have developed the product to be environmentally safer and low odour.

LTP Crackle Glaze Protector

Crackle glaze tiles are seeing an increase in popularity at the moment, and to keep them looking great they need to be properly sealed and looked after. The cracks in the glaze mean these tiles can be more porous and therefore prone to staining. LTP Crackle Glaze Protector creates a clear, colourless barrier against common household contaminants including water, oil, dirt, grease and limescale. It can also be used to protect the tiles from staining when using coloured grouts.

How To Seal Natural Stone Tiles

How to seal natural stone tiles

Natural stone tiles are often chosen for their rugged appearance and hardwearing nature, however these tiles are often unsealed and naturally extremely porous. This means they absorb moisture more easily than ceramic or porcelain tile, which will affect the quality of the tiles. Any liquid absorbed by the stone will also cause stains, which can be hard or even impossible to remove. Sealing natural stone tiles such as travertine, limestone, sandstone, slate and marble is therefore extremely important in preserving the life and look of your floors and surfaces.

Checking Tile Porosity

The level of porosity of your stone will affect the type and amount of sealer that is required. Place a teaspoon of water on clean and dry tile and time how long it takes for all of the water to be absorbed.

  • High Porosity – Water is absorbed within 5 minutes: 4 coats of sealer required in normal conditions.
  • Medium Porosity – Water is absorbed within 15 minutes: 3 coats of sealer required in normal conditions.
  • Low Porosity – Water is absorbed within 1 hour or longer: 2 coats of sealer required in normal conditions.

Sealing Terracotta Tiles

1. Fix the terracotta using suitable adhesive, if you get any adhesive on the top of the tile wipe off immediately with a clean cloth.

2. Apply 3-4 coats of LTP Boiled Linseed Oil using a paint brush, remove any unabsorbed oil with a cloth soaked in white spirit. Leave the oiled tiled to stand for 24 hours without adding any additional oil. Grout as normal.

3. Apply 3-6 thin coats of a synthetic sealant (LTP Ironwax Satin or Lithofin Multiseal) until you achieve an even sheen. Allow 30 minutes between each coat. Once all coats are applied, leave for 24 hours to become waterproof.

4. Clean and maintain your tiles with a cleaner that will not strip away the protective sealants, such as LTP Floorshine or Lithofin Easy Care.

Sealing Slate Tiles

1. Fix the slate using suitable adhesive, starting with the thicker ones if they are not calibrated.

2. Apply one coat of Lithofin MN Stain-Stop or LTP Colour Intensifier to the fixed tiles, then grout as normal.

3. Apply two additional coats of Lithofin MN Stain-Stop to fully seal the tiles and leave them with a matte finish.

4. To achieve a soft sheen to your slate surface apply a couple of coats of LTP Ironwax Satin or Lithofin Multiseal, this will need to be repeated every 9-12 months to maintain the soft sheen effect.

5. Clean and maintain your tiles with a cleaner that will not strip away the protective sealants, such as LTP Floorshine or Lithofin Easy Care.

Sealing Limestone and Sandstone Tiles

1. Fix the tiles using a white adhesive to avoid any discolouration of the stone. Use a colour enhancer at this point if you would like to enhance or deepen the colour of the tile.

2. Apply one coat of Lithofin MN Stain-Stop or LTP Mattstone with a sponge roller and grout the tiles as normal.

3.Apply an additional coat of Lithofin MN Stain-Stop. A third coat may be needed depending on the porosity of the tile.

4. For a soft sheen effect apply 2-4 coats of either LTP Ironwax Satin or Lithofin Multiseal.

5. Clean and maintain your tiles with a cleaner that will not strip away the protective sealants, such as Lithofin Easy Care or LTP Wax Wash.

Lithofin

In 1953 German manufacturer Glaubrecht Stingel began producing a new cleaning product called ST57 KUKÜ; not a very catchy name but it did pave the way for a full range of tile cleaning and sealing products. By 1961 the company had to relocate to a larger premises due to expansion and demand, as their products were being used by customers across Europe. In 1974 Stingel’s son, having completed a degree in chemistry, took over the firm and eventually rebranded the products under the Lithofin name.

Now one of the leading suppliers of products for cleaning, protecting and maintaining ceramics, natural and artificial stone, Lithofin is synonymous with specialist products that define the industry standard.
