Product Feature: Ardex WPC Tanking System White

Ardex WPC White Tanking Kit

We’ve Switched Our WPC Tanking System and Here’s Why You Should Too

At Tile Fix Direct we only stock the products which we believe are the best choices on the market for you, our customer. That’s why we have switched from the old grey WPC waterproofing to the new ARDEX WPC White Tanking System. ARDEX have over 60 years of experience and are one of the leaders in their field, so we know we can trust their product to do the job.

What are our reasons for switching? Well the new white colour has several great benefits that it’s grey predecessor did not:

  • The white colour means it is easy to see the marks you make in pencil or pen on walls for the tiles, pipes or whatever it is you are fixing in or up.
  • The new lighter colour makes it a great choice for installing glass or light coloured tiles, especially mosaics.
  • The new white WPC tanking system will make the whole room brighter while you are working in it. This makes the new colour especially useful in small bathrooms or enclosed wet rooms with no little to no light or windows.

Besides these great new benefits to the new white tanking system, it still also has all the previous benefits the original WPC kit had.

Why Waterproofing is Important

It is vital to waterproof the area being used before doing any work – as well as sealing the tiles afterwards if required. By taking the time to do this waterproofing you will help protect your bathroom, wet room or any internal and external wet area, from mould. The application of the WPC will also help protect the background from any unwanted water damage and leaks and, ultimately, give you some well-deserved peace of mind. Not only that but It will also make the finished tiled surface more hard-wearing and durable.

Why WPC is Good & What You Get

ARDEX WPC White Waterproof Tanking System is used as a waterproof protection coat on backgrounds such as cement, gypsum plaster, plasterboard, or wood-based materials. It is quick and easy to use. After applying the coating, tiles can be fixed to the background. The protective coat can be used to seal internal corners between walls, filling in holes, joints and gaps around pipes, and to seal baths and showers before tiling.

The kit consists of two components; a solvent-free acrylic dispersion and a reactive cement-based powder. In each box there is a free roller and scrim tape to help you with the application of the product. The pack size is 5kg/Powder and 5kg/Liquid and with consistent and even painting the product should provide a coverage of up to 6.6m2.

How to Use the Ardex WPC Kit

Ardex WPC Tanking is quick and easy to apply, here’s our guide to help you apply the WPC kit properly:

  1. Ensure that you have the appropriate tools and sufficient ARDEX WPC to cover the intended area. Make sure the surface to be tiled is dry, rigid, of sufficient strength and free from dust, grease, dirt, etc. Make sure to wear suitable gloves and eye/face protection and apply at temperatures above 5°C.
  2. Mix a small amount of ARDEX WPC to a slump free consistency for filling holes, gaps, joints etc. For application by spatula, pallet knife or towel, mix approximately 1.75kg ARDEX WPC liquid with 2.5kg ARDEX WPC powder per m2 at 3mm thickness, i.e 4.25kg of Mix No.1 per m2 at 3mm. The working time is approximately 45 minutes at 20°C.
  3. Apply the mixed ARDEX WPC (MIX No.1) with a spatula, pallet knife or trowel to seal joints in corners and fill holes and gaps around pipes, etc.
  4. Mix approximately 0.75kg ARDEX WPC liquid with 0.75kg ARDEX WPC powder per m2 at 0.8mm thickness to obtain a flowing consistency. Apply this Mix No.2 evenly with a brush or paint roller to cover the surface with a uniform coat. Leave 1 hour between each coat application to allow the WPC to fully dry.
  5. Ceramic tiles etc. can be fixed onto the second coat of ARDEX WPC after approximately 2 hours.

You should now be all set to use the new ARDEX WPC White Tanking System, happy tiling from all of us at Tile Fix Direct.

Marmox Sloping Board & SoundBoard Now Available at Tile Fix Direct

We’ve been stocking Marmox products since the beginning of Tile Fix Direct over 10 years ago and today Multiboard tile backer boards and Showerlay shower trays are still two of our best selling products. So we’re excited to add two more to our range – Sloping Board and SoundBoard. Sloping Board is designed to create a fall on balconies or in wet rooms while SoundBoard provides soundproofing for floors – read on to find out more.

Marmox Sloping Board

Sloping Board only differs from standard Multiboard in thickness; at the thinner end it measures 10mm thick with the slope extending to 33mm at the thicker end. The 1200x1200mm boards are still made of XPS foam sandwiched between two layers of patented polymer-concrete and has all the same properties – it’s waterproof, insulating, lightweight and perfect for tiling. The 10mm to 33mm slope may sound like an odd choice but it’s actually been designed to allow you to extend the slope indefinitely using 20mm thick boards as per the diagram below.

Sloping Board can be used internally and externally to create a self-draining tiled surface, in fact it was originally developed for use on balconies but is also a great solution for wet rooms or communal showering areas where a drainage channel is set against a wall. Tiling a balcony or terrace can often be difficult due to the fluctuations in temperature which can cause cracked tiles, but Marmox Sloping Board absorbs a large amount of the lateral movement in the sub floor making tiling a balcony a much safer prospect. When installed using Marmox waterproofing products it’s easy to create a leak-free tiled balcony above a habitable space.

Marmox SoundBoard

Impact sound can be a big concern when tiling floors in flats and apartments, in fact many local authorities do not allow tiled bathroom floors in shared accommodation for this very reason. Impact sound, illustrated by the red arrow in the diagram below, is often increased by tiling a floor making a solution like SoundBoard extremely important.

Marmox SoundBoard has a layer of rubber foam on one side that stops the vibrations transferring to the room below, reducing the impact sound by 20db. The boards are available in two thicknesses: 8mm and 12mm; the difference in the two thicknesses is that the 12mm board provides more thermal insulation than the 8mm version.

SoundBoard is much more than just soundproofing; it also acts as a decoupling layer to absorb lateral movement and prevent cracks in the tiles as well as being totally waterproof and providing thermal insulation.

  • Reduces sound (DLW) by 20db
  • Reduces heat loss by up to 60%
  • Load bearing – 30 tonnes/m2
  • Easy to cut with a saw or knife
  • Ready to receive tiles
  • fully waterproof

New Product: Orbry Pro Ply Construction Board

Orbry Pro Ply is a water resistant construction board that can be used to reinforce walls and floors as an alternative to Hardiebacker or No More Ply. It can be installed on a number of different substrates including concrete, timber, brick, stud partitions and heated screeds. Once installed the lightweight boards can be tiled, painted, wallpapered or plastered to achieve the finish you require.

The boards are made of magnesium oxide with a manufacturing process that produces very little CO2, making them much more environmentally friendly than cement-particle or gypsum boards. As well as producing less CO2, the boards are free from asbestos and silica and will not be affected by mould, fungus or insects. The strong boards are water resistant and dimensionally stable when wet, but they are also unaffected by changes in temperature – meaning they can be used inside or outside. Being non-flammable and non-combustable makes these boards perfect for use with both wet and electric underfloor heating systems and as part of fire resistant systems and firewalls.

Benefits of Orbry Pro Ply Board

  • Water resistant
  • Environmentally friendly
  • Strong
  • Non-flammable
  • Lightweight
  • Available in 6mm or 12mm thicknesses
  • Impact resistant
  • Suitable for internal & external use
  • Asbestos & silica free
  • Mould resistant
  • Can receive tiles, paint, wallpaper & plaster
  • Easy to install

Each board has a rough and a smooth side, the rough side must be facing outwards – so the smooth side is installed directly onto the floor or wall. The boards & substrate must be primed before installation – check the full installation instructions for more information. 6mm thick boards can be used to strengthen an existing timber floor in place of 15-18mm WBP plywood, while the 12mm boards replace plasterboard on walls & ceilings internally. The boards are water resistant but will need tanking if used in wet areas.

Orbry Pro Ply is available to order online at Tile Fix Direct with free delivery on all orders over £50. Please note that due to the size of the boards they will be delivered on a pallet. If you are looking for a waterproof board why not try Orbry Board or Marmox Multiboard?
